Indian Capital - New Delhi also referred to as Dilli, the capital of India, spread over an area of 1,483 km², is located in northern India on the banks of the river Yamuna. This city is the second-largest metropolis in India after Mumbai. Delhi has the political status of a federally-administered union territory known as the National Capital Territory of Delhi (NCT) comprising of nine districts, 27 tehsils, three statutory towns, 59 census towns and 165 villages.

As per historical records, Delhi has been the capital of several empires in ancient India, and was the home to great civilisations that flourished for more than three thousand years. Numerous dynasties and rulers left their imprint with ancient monuments, archaeological sites and remains of national importance on its regal soil. According to the epic Mahabharata, Indraprastha (old name of Delhi), now located near the Old Fort that stands on a large mound overlooking the river, was the city founded by the Pandavas. The Mughals built a section of the city (now known as Old City or Old Delhi) that served as the capital of the Mughal Empire for a long period. During the British regime, New Delhi was built as an administrative quarter of the city. The city was declared the capital of India after the country gained independence from British rule in 1947.

Delhi is an important commercial center in the South Asian region with a per capita income of Rs. 53,976, which is around 2.5 times of the national average. The public transport in Delhi is provided by auto rickshaws, a rapid transit system, taxis, suburban railways and buses.

Today, Delhi has turned to a cosmopolitan city owing to the immigration of people from across the country, representing many ethnic groups and cultures. The city is now a blend of the modern and traditional monuments, skyscrapers, beautiful gardens and wide tree-lined avenues and other architectural excellence. Delhi has today acclaimed global status as the city of flyovers.
